The
beginnings of our family forestry in its 5th generation
lie in the Schwabenberg estate. This is situated in
the Hochsauerlandkreis between the towns of Elpe, Ramsbeck
and Heinrichsdorf, with one of the highest elevations
in the Sauerland, the "Steinmarkskopf" at
an altitude of 720m above sea level.

It
is characterised by many steep slopes with a multitude
of springs and wet valleys. The Schwabenberg forest
is certified according to PEFC. Due to its exposed
location, the forest district is constantly at the
mercy of different natural catastrophes.

Whether
by Lothar, Wibke, Kyrill or Emma - the various low-pressure
systems mentioned here by name - the Schwabenberg
forest constantly recovered in its laborious efforts
of cultivation and natural regeneration.
Thus in our almost perfectly developed forest estate
measuring 255ha and a sustainable annual felling
averaging 1136 cubic-m(fm) solid measure of timber,
virtually all of the storm damaged wood could be
processed and sold. How the storm calamities (8-year
felling) will affect the future cannot as yet be
assessed one year after Kyrill.

Thanks
to plenty of rainfalls and primitive limy shale
rock, the district has enormous potential of natural
regeneration of pine and beech. Success here is
guaranteed all the more because of our cooperation
with our game tenant for over 10 years now.

As co-founders, we used our medium-sized forest
estate in 1987 to champion the establishment of
a joint timber marketing organisation with neighbouring
private forest owners.
Initially involving 7 parties, the "Holzvermarktungsgemeinschaft
Sauerland e.V." as a unique supportive society
in North Rhine-Westphalia and an organ that is not
dependent on the decision-making powers of the state
has borne much fruit in terms of maintenance and
continuation of its member forestry enterprises.
The aims of the Holzvermarktungsgemeinschaft
Sauerland e.V. include:
 the
reduction of our own cost-intensive forestry workers
(until 1986, the Schwabenberg forest had 2 employed
forestry workers)
steady growth of its members and the timber trade
volume
Our society agreed
to a partnership with the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft
Forstlicher Lohnunternehmer - NRW e.V." (Association
of Forestry Contractors), which devolved into
a GmbH (limited liability company), i.e. Holzkontor
Sauerland GmbH
As one of the few member enterprises, we market
almost 100% of our entire timber supply in the
Schwabenberg forest district via HKS GmbH.
The administrative
management of fellings and timber planning and
the timber volume made available for marketing
continues to be handled on our family estate in
Wolfskuhlenhof in cooperation with HKS GmbH.
Our former forestry workers, who still live in
our Schwabenberg forester's lodge, look after
our forest on site and are happy to help you with
booking your holiday in one of our flats in the
forester's lodge.
